Olivia woke up with her head splitting and feeling pretty out of it. She realized she was in Zoe’s room again. She grabbed her phone from the night stand to check the time. She didn’t want to be late for work! She couldn’t remember much from last night after the dancing. She thought she had some selfies of her and Sam though. She scrolled through her photos and sure enough, there was an adorable one of the two of them.
“I like that one too,” a deep voice said beside her.
Olivia bolted up in the bed and snatched the covers around her body. Sam was laying next to her grinning. He appeared to be clothed and she could tell she was still completely dressed. Relief surged through her, followed by embarrassment.
“Relax, nothing happened!” Sam chuckled. He was clearly enjoying her discomfort. “You do snore though.”
“I do not snore!” Olivia laughed and swatted at him.
He got out of bed and looked at her. Olivia felt her stomach flutter as he drew on his flannel and looked at her with sultry eyes.
“Look, I have to get to work and I imagine you do too, new job and all,” he held up his hands as if hoping to find words. “I know this is backward, but now that we’ve slept together would you like to go on a date with me?” he finished in a joking manner that perhaps would let him off the hook if she said no.
“I’d love to,” she said simply as he leaned in and pulled her close. She thought he may kiss her, but he hugged her firmly then walked out of the room.
“Hi Olivia, it’s Sam.”
“Hey Sam! It’s nice to hear from you. Did you have a good day at work?” Her stomach fluttered at the sound of his voice. She still remembered his slightly tousled look from that morning.
“Yeah, I was a bit distracted today though,” Sam said.
Olivia could hear the smile in his voice and her butterflies fluttered around again, hopeful… “Oh?”
“Yeah, I couldn’t wait to talk to you again.” Apparently Sam was putting his feelings out there now. In the short time Olivia had known him, he seemed so self assured. So confident.
She decided to take a queue from him and was a bit more honest than she normally may be, “I felt the same all day. Trust me it’s tough enough starting a new job, it’s twice as tough when you are distracted.”
The two agreed to meet at the comedy club in Oasis Springs. Olivia had to head to the gym to shower and get ready for their date. Living on a plot of land with no running water or electricity had a lot of disadvantages.
“Wow, you look amazing!” Sam said after he walked across the room when Olivia arrived.
“Thanks, you clean up pretty well yourself.”
Sam got the two of them a few drinks and they sat down together on one of the sofas. Olivia began telling this funny story about work.
“…and then he couldn’t get the tape off the back of his pants!”
The couple laughed together. Olivia could feel electricity between them every time their hands would brush together. She couldn’t imagine a better evening.
The danced in between comedic sets and there was even a slow dance when he brought her close to him. His large warm hands pressed against the small of her back. She felt him twirl a lock of her hair between his fingers and she smiled into his shoulder as they swayed.
Near the end of the evening, Sam seemed distracted as if he wanted to say something.
“What is it Sam?”
“Well, Olivia, I know we’ve only known each other a few days now. But you’re so easy to talk to and I feel so comfortable with you. My brother and my friends already adore you, and I do too. I know it’s soon, but would you want to date exclusively?”
“Sam, are you asking me to be your girlfriend?” Olivia smiled and brushed the back of her hand along his cheek.
He nodded, and for the first time since she’d met him, his confidence seemed to slip a bit.
“I’d love to be your girlfriend.”
That was all he needed to hear. Sam pulled her close for their first kiss.
