Sam took Olivia out to their favorite comedy lounge to celebrate the big news. Of course they dressed up for the occasion, though Olivia’s clothing was definitely fitting a bit more snug these days.
“Two club sodas please,” He asked the bartender.
“‘Liv, I am so thrilled about our pending family and I love you madly.” Sam began.
Sam took her hands and stood up. He went down on a single knee and took out a small diamond. “Will you make me the happiest guy alive and honor me with your hand in marriage?”
Olivia pulled Sam to his feet. “What? You are asking me to marry you?” Olivia was stunned. They’d never talked about marriage at all.
“I know we don’t have much, but I promise we’ll be great parents and …” Sam stuttered.
“Is that what this is about? The baby?” Olivia asked.
“Ummm, no. Well, yes.” Sam started. “Well, a bit, it’s not exclusively about the baby, ‘Liv, you know we’re made for each other!” Sam was starting to sweat a little. This wasn’t at all how he pictured this proposal happening tonight. There was much more ‘YES!’ and excitement and kissing. Lots of kissing in his imaginary proposal.
Olivia took Sam’s hands, “Sam, I love you. You know that I do. Honestly I want nothing more than to be your wife. But for me, this is forever. This isn’t just something to jump into because you feel pressure because of our baby.”
Sam took her hands. “It isn’t the pressure Olivia. I’ve said this all wrong.” He kissed her gently and pulled back.
Then he started again. “Olivia Delaney, will you be my wife, will you be part of my life today and always. Will you laugh at my jokes and help boost my spirits when I’m down. I promise to do all of those things for you every day of my life.”
“I will,” Olivia said softly.
Sam slid the diamond onto her hand. “Whooop!!” Sam exclaimed and grabbed her into a much more passionate kiss.
“Zoe, it’s me, can I come over?”
“Sure, I’m getting ready for work, but pop on by!”
Olivia was bursting to tell her best friend. She met Zoe outside and couldn’t help smiling.
“Ok, I have some huge news,” Olivia began. “Two things really.”
“Oh god ‘Liv, I’m not getting younger!” Zoe laughed.
“Ok, first, Sam and I are engaged, and second, Sam and I are pregnant!”
“What oh my gosh, oh my gosh!” Zoe squealed. She started dancing in place with excitement. “I’m going to be an Auntie!”
“Olivia! I’m so incredibly thrilled! You two are going to make the most beautiful babies!”
“Thank you Zoe. You truly are my best friend.”
A few weeks later, Olivia invited Sam to meet her at the park after work. She met him at the entry and began by handing him a rose.
“Whoa! Olivia, what’s going on, and wow you look amazing!”
Olivia laughed. “Sam my love, I didn’t want to wait anymore to be married. We can have a vow renewal with all our friends after the baby is born and I can have a few drinks, and not wear stretchy clothes to the ceremony. But I want to marry you now, right here at this beautiful park where we have so many memories.”
“Well, can I get a shower and change first?”
“Unfortunately there isn’t any time . The Justice of the Peace is waiting for us over there,” She pointed past the children’s play area.
“Well, ok then. If you don’t mind, I’m ready!”
The couple held hands and walked toward the Justice of the Peace.
“Sam and Olivia, I remind you that marriage is a precious gift, a lifelong commitment, and a challenge to love one another more completely each and every day. Please join hands and look into each other’s eyes.”
“Sam, with this understanding, do you take Olivia to be your wedded wife to live together in marriage? Do you promise to love her, comfort her, honor and keep her for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, forsaking all others and to be faithful only to her, so long as you both shall live?”
Sam looked into Olivia’s eyes and said, “I do.”
“Olivia, with this understanding, do you take Sam to be your wedded husband, to live together in marriage? Do you promise to love him, comfort him, honor and keep him, for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, forsaking all others and to be faithful only to him, so long as you both shall live?
Olivia gripped Sam’s hands a bit tighter and whispered hoarsely, “I do.”
“May I have the rings?” Sam and Olivia both passed their wedding rings to him. “Now, as you each take the ring and place this on the other’s hand, know that these rings symbolize the desire that you be husband and wife from this day forward. As these rings have no end, neither shall your love for one another.”
“You have consented together in matrimony. You have pledged your vows to one another and exchanged rings. It is my great pleasure to pronounce you husband and wife. You may seal your vows with a kiss!”
“Congratulations Mr. & Mrs. Delaney!”
